Glastonbury 1994 or 1995

My sister recently found a wonderful collection of old photographs. Within the bundle were these absolute treasures. Treasures not only as new images of beautiful Steven, but also because they affirmed some memories - and unlocked some new ones.

One aspect that is still hazy is how Steven got to Glastonbury. My sister, Mark and Sam travelled with my Dad who had been roped into being our responsible adult as I was only 14 or 15 years old - my sister two years older. My recollection is that Steven probably hitchhiked and hopped over the fence. We must have found each other - how without mobile phones is a mystery! And set up camp together.

What I do remember though is bouncing around our first festival with Steven’s infectious joyful energy. We must have been so influenced by the sights, scenes and smells as we were so young. The freedom,…

It occurred to me after I wrote this that Lungu is probably a Zambian name. I was there for just a couple of months but travelling all over doing focus group discussions in villages with a team from the university. Loved the country and the work. Best, david

Retrospective of Steven’s Work

Thank you to those who organised the retrospective at the Curzon Soho on Saturday.

It was brilliant to see Steven’s work on the big screen and even better to see Steven up there. I will never get over his beauty, humour and what a wonderful weirdo he is! It’s why we love him! It made me laugh and cry.

Here are som pics from the evening, including Deano and Rory who gave lovely speeches. ❤️

Hitchhikers

I looked around for this photo for nearly two years ever since I heard the news about Steven passing away through a phonecall from his sister Sonia whilst out on my bike in Japan. I had it on my bedroom wall for a long time and thus it was in the wall of my mind when Steven's name came up. Up in the loft, in a sketchbook I found it this summer just been.

I think the year was 1997 and one of us suggested hitchhiking to Glastonbury it was the first time I’d been to a music festival I wasn’t sure about Steven. We had been stood on Clive Sullivan Way in the pouring rain with our Posca marker pen and cardboard sign for well over an hour before it began disintegrating and we started thinking about calling it a day, when along pulled up a massive white articulated…

As Glastonbury approaches this year I was wondering if Steven had been and tried to recall conversations with him. I was sure he would have being such a rock star. Dan, thanks for sharing such a fun, muddy adventure. X

Cherishing the Creative Mind of Steven Santa Cruz Booth

Subject: Cherishing the Creative Mind of Steven Santa Cruz Booth

Dear Family and friends of Steven,

I hope this message finds his way. I am reaching out to you today to express my deep appreciation for the creative mind and spirit of our dear friend, Steven Santa Cruz Booth.

It is with a heavy heart that I learned of his passing, and I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the impact he had on me.

During our short time together in the English city of Sheffield, I had the privilege of witnessing Steven's exceptional creativity and unique perspective on the world. We connected on a level that allowed us to explore our shared passion for artistic expression and embrace our individual journeys of self-discovery. Although circumstances and personal development led us on separate paths, I always admired the way Steven fearlessly pursued his own vision of the world.

Björn, Thanks a lot for sharing these memories. They make a big difference to his family, even now two years on from Steve's death. Warm wishes, David (his dad).

Santa Cruz Shorts

Hello everybody,

I'd like to let you know about Santa Cruz Shorts, a short film festival to be held at The Curzon Soho this June. The Curzon have very kindly given us a prime Saturday night slot this summer to hold our inaugural festival in Steven's honour.

We want to celebrate Steven's energy and enthusiasm for film and support filmmakers at the same time. Head over to www.santacruzshorts.com or follow @santacruzshorts on Instagram.

If you or anyone you know has a short film you would like to submit please do so! The only real requirements are that the films are self funded and under 10 mins. Submissions are free!

I will send more details of the event, which will of course involve dancing! We now have a date as Saturday 18th June, and obviously we would love to have all of Steven's loved ones there.

If you have any questions…

"Giddy Stratospheres"

Thought you all might like to know that the movie Giddy Stratospheres, a fun celebration of the 00s music scene set in 2007 that features the Pink Grease song Fever on the soundtrack, is out on streaming services from today. It was directed by (and stars) Steve's friend Laura Jean Marsh, and he gets a dedication at the start and end alongside some other departed friends.

Travels with Steve

I started working at Mute in 2004 and my first project was Pink Grease. I went to see them supporting Alec Empire at the Barfly and remember thinking they were going to be a handful!

It was my job to take them around the world to promote the record and I was a bit nervous about travelling with them. However as soon as I met them properly I was overwhelmed by how friendly and fun they all were.

Steve was so passionate about what they were doing and they were all so excited. We travelled around Europe and to Australia, Japan and Russia. I remember Steve was particularly excited about visiting Japan.

There were a lot of late nights and a lot of drinking on the Mute tab but Steve always had his eye on the prize and was thoughtful and serious about the band. He was fantastic about creating…
