I started working at Mute in 2004 and my first project was Pink Grease. I went to see them supporting Alec Empire at the Barfly and remember thinking they were going to be a handful!
It was my job to take them around the world to promote the record and I was a bit nervous about travelling with them. However as soon as I met them properly I was overwhelmed by how friendly and fun they all were.
Steve was so passionate about what they were doing and they were all so excited. We travelled around Europe and to Australia, Japan and Russia. I remember Steve was particularly excited about visiting Japan.
There were a lot of late nights and a lot of drinking on the Mute tab but Steve always had his eye on the prize and was thoughtful and serious about the band. He was fantastic about creating a sense of mystique around the band and gave great quotes in interviews. He was a bit of a Svengali of the controlled chaos and I often saw him sitting back with a smile on his face enjoying what he had created with the others.
