Steven really liked the song "Fait moi mal Johnny" by Boris Vian. He thought it was the perfect poem to read in the penultimate scene of Eating Scarlet. Only problem was of course that it wasn't a poem but a song by Boris Vian that was still under copyright. Steven with his irreverent attitude to anything that stood in the way of his creative vision, said to me, "it'll be alright Karin, you can get it. Copyright, schompyright, no problem". And of course he was right, I got it for him after getting permission from the estate of Boris Vian. A not very easy or simple process, but then again things that are worth it, seldom are. I was a little worried if I'd be able pull it off, I had after all never produced a film before, let alone worked on a film before. But Steven had this fearless belief that we could do it, that I could do it, no matter the obstacle. We had many discussions back and forth while making the film, we are both very passionate people. It still feels strange to refer to Steven in the past tense. Because in my mind, when I think of him, he is still very much alive. I can still hear his laughter, see him adjusting his glasses and intently listening to whatever story or subject we're discussing. I miss my friend and partner-in-film.
Here's the youtube video of song that inspired the poem, listen to it and you'll see why Steven was right, it really is a great song.
